Cooling system repairs, in your driveway
Overheating in stop-start traffic, a sweet smell in the cabin, puddles under the engine. We pressure-test the cooling system on-site and replace what's leaking, without you waiting on a workshop slot.

When you need cooling-system repair
Cooling problems show up in three ways. Knowing which one you are seeing gets you a long way toward the fix.
The needle creeps up. The temperature gauge sits higher than it used to, especially in traffic. The fan kicks in and you can hear it working overtime. The next step is the warning light, then steam from under the bonnet. Stop driving the moment you see steam.
The sweet smell. Coolant has a distinctive sugary smell when it leaks. You might catch it through the air vents, or notice it after you park. Small leaks become big leaks fast in a system that runs at 100 degrees Celsius and 15 psi.
The puddles. Coolant is usually green, pink or orange. If you see a coloured puddle under the engine bay after parking, that is almost certainly the cooling system. A clear puddle is usually air-conditioning condensation and is normal.
Any of these means it is time for a pressure test. Leaving them costs you head gaskets, warped cylinder heads and complete engine rebuilds. The pressure test is far cheaper than the consequence.
What's included
Cooling-system work covers four main components, often working together:
- Radiator — the heat exchanger at the front of the car. Replaces every 150,000 to 250,000 km typically.
- Water pump — moves coolant through the engine. Replaces every 120,000 to 200,000 km, or at timing-belt service.
- Thermostat — opens and closes to regulate coolant flow. Cheap to replace but a common cause of overheating.
- Hoses and clamps — the soft parts that fail first, especially in Queensland heat.
A typical cooling-system repair from us includes:
- Full system pressure test (with the engine cold and again warm) to find the exact leak
- Inspection of all hoses, clamps, the thermostat housing and water pump
- Replacement of the faulty component using genuine OEM or equivalent parts
- Genuine OEM-spec coolant, never the universal "all colour" stuff
- Bleed of the system to remove air pockets (critical, gets missed by lazy workshops)
- Thirty-minute road test to confirm correct operating temperature
If we find a second worn component while we are in there (a hose that is about to go, a marginal thermostat), we tell you, give you a fixed quote, and you decide. Nothing goes on the bill without your agreement.
How it works
1. Tell us what's happening. Call 0451 159 954 or use the quote form. The temperature gauge behaviour, any smells, any puddles, and how long it has been doing it.
2. Pressure test and diagnosis. On-site, about 45 minutes. You see exactly where the leak is.
3. Repair on the spot or scheduled return. Hoses and thermostats are usually fitted same-visit. Water pumps and radiators are usually scheduled for the next available day to get the right part on the van.
What it costs
We quote a fixed price in writing before any work begins, based on your specific make, model and the actual job. Call us with the details and we will give you a real number on the spot.
Routine servicing in Brisbane typically ranges from $188 to $449 as a general market guide, depending on whether it is a minor or major service and the size of the vehicle, before any extra repairs. See how our pricing works for more.
Why customers pick us for cooling-system work
- We pressure-test before we quote. A workshop will sometimes guess and replace the wrong part. The pressure test removes the guessing.
- OEM coolant. Queensland summers are punishing on cooling systems and the wrong coolant accelerates corrosion. We use the manufacturer-spec coolant for your engine, every time.
- Workmanship warranty per our terms. Every cooling-system repair carries a workmanship warranty under our standard terms.
Where we cover
We cover Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and the Gold Coast, working out of Springwood. Overheating callouts spike in January and February. If you are stuck and worried, call us first, do not drive an overheating car to a workshop.

What customers ask about radiator & cooling system.
My car is overheating in traffic but fine on the highway. Why?
When you are moving, airflow through the radiator does most of the cooling. In stop-start traffic, the engine relies on the cooling fan instead. If the cooling fan, thermostat or water pump is on the way out, the temperature spikes the moment you stop moving. The fix depends on which component is failing, which is what the pressure test tells us.
How much does a radiator replacement cost?
Cooling-system pricing varies widely depending on whether it's a radiator replacement, water-pump replacement, thermostat, hose, or a combination. Late-model SUVs with electric water pumps and integrated coolant assemblies cost more than older designs. We quote the exact price for your vehicle once we've confirmed the cause.
How long does a water pump last?
Most water pumps last between 120,000 and 200,000 km. On engines with a timing-belt-driven water pump, we recommend replacing the pump at the same time as the timing belt (the labour overlap is significant). If your car has a chain-driven water pump, replace it on its own when it starts weeping coolant.
Can you replace a water pump at my home?
Yes for most vehicles. Some engines need the timing belt pulled to access the water pump, which is a longer job (3 to 5 hours), and we are happy to do that on-site. The few engines we cannot do at home are V6s and V8s where access requires lifting the cab or removing the front-end clip. We will tell you upfront if your engine falls into that bracket.
What's the sweet smell coming from my car?
It is almost always coolant. Coolant has a sweet, syrup-like smell and usually means a small leak somewhere in the system. Most often it is a hose, a hose clamp, or a small radiator weep. Catching it early is the difference between a small hose replacement and a full cooling-system overhaul after the engine overheats.
Do you cover my suburb?
We cover Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and the Gold Coast, working out of Springwood. Common cooling-system callouts come from all four regions, especially during summer. Check the coverage page or call 0451 159 954 to confirm.
