When you need this

Suspension and steering wear is gradual, so most people do not notice it until something gets bad enough to be loud or to start chewing tyres. The clues to watch for:

  • A clunk, thud or knock over speed bumps or rough roads
  • The car feeling "floaty" or taking multiple bounces to settle after a bump
  • Tyres wearing more on one edge than the other, or wearing unevenly across the width
  • The steering wheel off-centre when driving straight, or wandering at highway speed
  • A vibration through the wheel that comes and goes with road condition
  • The car nose-diving heavily under brakes

Leaving suspension faults gets expensive in a roundabout way. Worn components chew through tyres, push other components out of alignment, and turn a cheap sway-bar link replacement into a far more expensive control-arm job that includes new tyres.

What's included

A typical steering and suspension job covers one or more of these components:

  • Sway-bar links and bushes — the small parts that fail first, especially in Queensland heat
  • Ball joints (upper and lower) — the pivot points; the most common source of clunks
  • Control-arm bushes — the rubber that absorbs road shock and locates the wheel
  • Tie-rod ends — the joints between the steering rack and the wheel
  • Shocks and struts — the dampers; replaced in axle-pairs at minimum
  • Strut top mounts and bearings — replaced with the strut, since the labour overlap is significant
  • Coil springs — replaced only when broken or sagging; usually outlast the rest of the suspension

We use OEM or quality aftermarket parts that meet or exceed manufacturer specifications. We do not fit bargain-bin suspension parts, they fail fast and ride worse than what they replaced.

How it works

1. Tell us the symptom. Call 0451 159 954 or use the quote form. The more specific the better. "Clunk over speed bumps, more on the left front, started about three months ago" tells us a lot.

2. On-site diagnostic. A full steering and suspension inspection. We lift the car on safe jack stands, do the play checks on every joint, and road-test. You see exactly what we found.

3. Fixed-price quote for the repair. Quoted item by item. You decide whether to do all of it, just the worst, or to schedule the work for later. The diagnostic fee is credited against the repair if you proceed.

4. Job done at your place. Most jobs are 2 to 4 hours on-site. Shocks and struts almost always take an axle-pair (both fronts or both rears) at the same time, because a new shock will out-perform an old one on the other side and ride poorly.

What it costs

We quote a fixed price in writing before any work begins, based on your specific make, model and the actual components that need replacing. Call us with the details and we will give you a real number on the spot.

Wheel alignment is typically recommended after major suspension work, and that is done at a workshop with an alignment rig. We will point you to an alignment shop in your suburb if you need one. See how our pricing works for more.

Why customers pick us for steering and suspension

  • Diagnosis before replacement. A clunk could be one of six things. We find which one before we charge you for any of them.
  • Quality parts. OEM or quality aftermarket parts for damping, joints and bushes. The cheap stuff is more expensive in the long run.
  • Honest about the scope. Wheel alignments need a workshop, and we will tell you so. We do not take on jobs we cannot finish properly on-site.

Where we cover

Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich and the northern Gold Coast, across South East Queensland. Suspension callouts come from across the area, especially after a road trip or a stint on rough country roads.

Frequently asked

What customers ask about steering & suspension.

What are the typical signs of suspension wear?

The four big ones. Clunks or thuds over bumps and speed bumps (usually worn ball joints, sway-bar links or shocks). Uneven tyre wear (worn shocks, bushes, or steering geometry). A bouncy ride that takes more than two bounces to settle (worn shocks). A steering wheel that wanders or feels vague at highway speed (worn tie-rod ends, ball joints or a loose steering rack).

I hear a clunk over speed bumps. What is the most likely cause?

On most cars, the top of the list is sway-bar links (cheap and quick to replace), then sway-bar bushes, then upper or lower ball joints. If the clunk is heavier and only over deeper bumps, it is often the shocks or strut top mounts. We diagnose on-site by lifting the wheels, doing a manual play check, and road-testing.

Uneven tyre wear, what does it mean?

Wear on the inside or outside edge usually points to suspension geometry or worn components (control-arm bushes, ball joints, tie-rod ends). Cupping or scalloping along the tread usually points to worn shocks. Centre wear often points to over-inflation. Edge wear often points to under-inflation. We can usually tell what is worn from the wear pattern alone.

How long do shock absorbers last?

80,000 to 150,000 km is typical, depending on driving style and road condition. Australian potholes shorten shock life. Heavy loads (towing, full ute trays, family-of-five SUVs) shorten it further. If your car bounces more than twice when you push the corner down by hand, the shocks are due.

Will the car ride harsher with new shocks?

New shocks ride better, not harsher. They control the spring properly, so the car settles faster after a bump and feels more planted. What people sometimes call "harsher" is actually the absence of wallow they had got used to with the worn shocks.

What does the diagnostic cost?

A full steering and suspension inspection takes about 90 minutes. We lift the car on safe jack stands, check every joint and bush manually, road-test, and quote each repair as a fixed price. If you proceed with the repairs, the inspection fee is credited against the work.
